2 X Activated carbon filter water bottles (www.purehydration.com) No pumping required.
2 X 750ml Camelback Podium water bottles with optional cap
Dry bags to pack clothes and tent outer. Also helps keep panniers organised.
Foam sleeping mat cut down to head and body length. (Lightweight air mats can easily get punctured).
4-Season sleeping bag
Spare Boot Laces
Quad Lock phone attachment
2 Wallets, 1 small enough to fit in jersey pocket whilst cycling
Curreny holder that hags around neck. Usually hidden in pannier but good for transfers.
Spare basic mobile phone and pay as you go SIM.
Cycle bell (A fog horn would be more appropriate for India)
Long cable cycle lock and alarmed café lock.
If I was doing a similar trip again, I may well be tempted to replace the Activated Carbon filter bottles for the equivalent hydration pack and in-line filter as this would take up less space when not in use.
Clothing
Northwave mountain bike shoes. (Because the velcro only straps are simple and reliable)
Shimano Mountain Bike SH-MT91 Boots. (Good for colder weather and for walking)
I used Shimano mountain bike cleats as this provides walk-ability. Apart from the cycle shorts, all my clothes were chosen to be dual purpose so that they could be used off the bike as well as on. I also feel the cold so did not want to skimp on cold weather clothing.
2 X Cycling padded undershorts
2 X Normal underpants
2 X Cycling ¾ length tights (Good for Muslim countries where shorter length may cause offence)
2 X Baggy lightweight shorts
1 X Cycling thermal leg warmers to go beneath cycle shorts
2 X lightweight tops
1 X light to middle weight long sleeve top
1 X Middleweight top long sleeve
1 X Thermal fleece top
1 X thermal base layer
3 X pairs cycle socks
1 X pair thermal socks
1 X waterproof and windproof jacket
1 X stretchy tube for ear and / or head warming
1 X Cycle helmet
I swapped some clothes as I went along. In Europe when the temperature took a nose dive I purchased a pair of ski socks. I also swopped the ¾ tights and leg warmers with full length thermal tights and the shorts for a pair of Trekking trousers.
Going across the Himalayas, I was able to get between villages each day and sleep the nights in homestays. Consequently I did not use the thermal fleece top or thermal base layer. However, it is essential to go prepared.
Things I wish I had Taken
A bluetooth keyboard for my smart phone. The smart phone was my only computing power and trying to type on a touch screen is a right pain. Not great when you want to write a long email or fill in a visa form. If I had taken a keyboard I may well have posted a journal as I went along. I guess for a trip that lasted a year, missing just 1 item is not bad.
