All nice and sealed away from external damage. You just have to hope it is reliable as there is no DIY fixes for this little lot.
Base Camp It is a very good idea to have a friend or relative act as base camp. Whilst I carried all the normal spares such as brake pads, brake hose connectors, gear cables and sokes, the things that actually broke I was not able to carry such as pedals. Spare parts for high tech European and North American bikes are not available in many parts.
Cycle Shops So far as I am aware there are only two bicycle shops that sell/support high tech European and American bikes along the line of route through Asia. This was Bok Bok bike in Bangkok www.bokbokbike-thailand.com/ and Bisiklet Gezgini www.bisikletgezgini.com/ on the Asian side of Istanbul. Both are able to re-lace wheels if you crack a rim or hub as I did. in the Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan I found the odd cycle shop or market stall selling really basic stuff. When I broke a pedal, all I could get was a plastic pedal. But it lasted long enough for me to catch up with a replacement set, sent from home.
In Iran I found a number of cycle shops selling Giant bikes. So at least the basics like tyres, tubes, gear and brake cables will be available. Probably they don't sell the latest top of the range 9 and 10 speed parts, but I didn't check this out as I had no technical problems in Iran.
